Emotional and Behavioral Health Services in Mankato
One in five adults in the United States are taking a prescription medication for mental health issues (e.g., Prozac). Drugs are great at relieving symptoms, but do not get at the core causes of one’s distress. The psychotherapy work that I do aims for the underlying mechanisms or roots for how people suffer, including aspects related to culture, lifestyle and relationships. My expertise comes with over 10 years of clinical practice, while working academically at places such as University of Wisconsin-Madison as well as my own personal experience with medication and mental health issues.
After an initial clinical assessment (60 minutes), I work with you to develop a plan for reaching your goals. Sessions are 45-50 minutes long and I start by using elements of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Together, we illuminate how your mind works by constructing a shared language together. Collaborating on a diagnosis can be useful, but what is most important to me is developing a professional relationship with you. The foundations of this relationship are trust, mutual respect, healthy boundaries and non-judgment.
As we work together, I will ask you relevant questions about your upbringing and current relationships. We will construct a timeline of your most relevant life events and explore core cognitions that are burdening you. This is frequently done in trauma treatment using Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. It can assist in unlocking distressing memories you get stuck on.
Mindfulness approaches are the core of my therapeutic process. Paying attention to the present moment is the work I do, and the work you can do.
In a comfortable and supportive atmosphere, I offer a highly personalized approach tailored to each of my client's individual needs to help attain the growth they’re striving for. My treatment specialization includes:
- Post-traumatic Stress
- Life Transitions
